The hardest part of improving Diablo 4 Items is deciding which drops deserve your resources once upgrades become expensive. You'll find a promising weapon, push its Masterworking Quality, then discover that the next replacement needs the same mountain of Obducite. With the 0-to-25 Quality progression described for Season 15's Hell's Legacy, that spending decision matters as much as your farming route.
The temptation is to treat Quality 25 as the immediate goal for every equipped piece. That approach can leave you short of gold and materials while weaker slots still hold back your character. A more effective routine starts with identifying your next useful power increase, then choosing the activity and upgrade that get you there fastest.
1 Which Items Actually Deserve Your Obducite
A strong base gives Masterworking something worthwhile to improve. Desirable affixes, useful Greater Affixes, and a clear role in your build matter more than the excitement of seeing a rare drop. An impressive item can still be a poor investment if its attributes don't support the damage, resource economy, or survivability your character needs.
Before spending heavily, settle your Tempering and major Enchanting choices. Re-tempering preserves existing Masterworking progress under the system described here, but preservation doesn't make every early investment efficient. You still lose time when you develop an item that you soon replace.
◆ Prioritize equipment with affixes that directly support your main skill or solve a recurring survival problem.
◆ Treat Greater Affixes as part of the evaluation, since their value depends on which attribute receives them.
◆ Give temporary pieces enough investment to keep progression comfortable, then reserve larger commitments for convincing upgrades.
This distinction becomes obvious when a character starts struggling at a higher Torment difficulty. If one slot is dragging down your damage or defenses, improving that slot may do more for your clear speed than squeezing another expensive rank out of your strongest item.
2 Why Is Rushing Quality 25 Often Inefficient
Masterworking at the Blacksmith consumes gold, Obducite, and salvage materials, with Obducite requirements increasing as Quality rises. Each successful upgrade improves the item, and the process doesn't fail. The uncertainty arrives with the final Masterwork option at Quality 25, where a powerful Capstone bonus targets a random affix.
That creates two separate decisions: whether the item deserves more Quality, and whether its possible Capstone outcomes justify the full expense. A piece with several useful affixes offers more satisfying outcomes than one whose appeal depends entirely on a single attribute receiving the bonus.
In practice, gradual investment makes your whole setup easier to develop. Early ranks can deliver useful gains across several slots while leaving enough resources to react to a new drop. Pushing one item straight to the ceiling makes sense when its improvement solves a specific problem, but it shouldn't become an automatic habit.
◆ Evaluate the total cost of the next improvement against what the same resources could achieve elsewhere.
◆ Keep using a strong item when its Capstone lands on a secondary but useful affix.
◆ Confirm the current reset or reroll options before budgeting around another attempt at your preferred result.
3 Which Obducite Farm Fits Your Character
The Pit doesn't supply Obducite in the system outlined here, so repeating it won't replenish your Masterworking reserve. Your practical choices are Infernal Hordes, suitable Kurast Undercity runs, and Nightmare Dungeons. Their value depends on completion time, reward access, and how comfortably you handle the selected difficulty.
Infernal Hordes is an attractive option when you want a large material payout and can reliably reach the reward room. Choose the Spoils of Materials chest, and remember that Torment difficulty affects yield. A higher setting only helps your hourly return if the extra reward compensates for slower combat or interrupted runs.
Kurast Undercity becomes useful when you have tributes that support material rewards. Check what your tribute provides before committing it. Nightmare Dungeons offer a dependable alternative when their layouts and encounters suit your character, particularly if smoother clears let you spend more time fighting and less time recovering.
Measure a few completed runs instead of judging by one generous payout. Include preparation, travel, and unsuccessful attempts in your comparison. The best route is the one you can repeat efficiently while also collecting resources your character needs.
4 How Should You Turn Farming Into Steady Progress
A productive session needs a spending target. Without one, it's easy to collect Obducite for an hour, consume everything at the Blacksmith, and finish with little improvement in the content you actually play. Choose a weak slot or a dependable long-term item before starting your runs.
1) Finish the item's key affix decisions and identify the next useful Quality increase.
2) Farm an activity you can clear consistently, tracking gold alongside Obducite.
3) Apply the upgrade, test its effect, and keep a reserve for your next worthwhile drop.
The same priorities matter if you choose to buy Diablo 4 materials while planning your next upgrade: available resources don't change whether an item deserves investment. Keep enough gold to support the ranks you intend to purchase, reassess equipment when your build changes, and judge progress by smoother clears and stronger performance. Quality 25 is most rewarding when the item earning it has already proved its place in your setup.
